10 Major Indian Tragedies

Here is the list of 10 Major Indian Tragedies.

1. Jallianwala Bagh Massacre, 1919

Jallianwala Bagh Massacre is also known as Amritsar Massacre. on April 13, 1919 people of Amritsar was gathered to celebrate the festival of Baishaki in Jallianwala Bagh Garden, on the order of General Dyer the army fired on the crowd for about 10 minutes.

According to the British government the number were 370 dead and 1,200 wounded people. But the other sources place the number of dead people is more than 1,000 and around 1,500 wounded people.

2. Bhopal Disaster, 1984

Bhopal Disaster is also known as Bhopal Gas Tragedy. No one thinks that a gas leak incident in India is considered as the World's worst Industrial disaster. This incident happened on 2nd and 3rd of December 1984 at the Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL) pesticide plant in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.

According to the officials immediate death toll was 2,259 but the government of Madhya Pradesh confirmed a total of 3,787.

3. 1999 Odisha Cyclone

The 1999 Odisha Cyclone is also known as Cyclone 05B and Paradip Cyclone. It was the strongest and deadliest tropical cyclone ever recorded in the North Indian Ocean. It formed over the Malay Peninsula on October 25th and hit India on 28th October at a speed of 155 mph(250 Km/h). This Cyclone caused the deaths of about 10,000 people.

4. Gujarat Earthquake, 2001

The Gujarat Earthquake occurred on 26th January 2001. India's 52nd Republic day at 8:46 am and it lasted for 2 minutes. The epicenter was in Chobari Kutch district of Gujarat. Density of this earthquake was 7.7 magnitude. This earthquake caused around 20,000 people, injured around 167,000 people and destroyed nearly 400,000 homes.

5. Indian Ocean Tsunami, 2004

Indian Ocean Tsunami was occurred on 26 December 2004. The epicenter was in Sumatra, Indonesia. Density of this earthquake was 9.1-9.3 magnitude and it lasts for around 10 minutes. 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami is also known as South Asian tsunamiIndonesian tsunami, the Christmas tsunami and the Boxing Day tsunami.

6. Mumbai Floods, 2005

The 2005 Mumbai floods occurred on 26th July 2005 around 2 pm. This floods caused death of around 5,000 people.

7. Mumbai Terror Attacks, 2008 

Mumbai Terror attack or 26/11 a series of twelve coordinating shooting attacks across Mumbai. Affected places are Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, th Oberoi Trident, the Taj Mahal Palace & Tower, Leopold cafe, Cama Hospital, the Nariman Jewish Community centre, the Metro Cinema also in the lane behind the Times of India building and St. Xavier's College.

Mumbai Terror attacks started on 26th November and it lasted on 29th November 2008. According to report around 164 people died in this incident and around 308 people injured.





8. Uttarakhand Floods, 2013

Multi-day Cloudburst happened in June 2013 that caused devastating floods and land slides in North Indian state of Uttarakhand. This was the worst natural disaster after the Tsunami 2004.

According to data provided by Uttarakhand government more than 5,700 people died in this incident. Total 4,200 villages affected by Uttarakhand floods.

9. Cyclone Phailin, 2013

Cyclone Phailin was the second strongest tropical cyclone after 1999 Odisha Cyclone to make landfall in India. This cyclone started on October 4th 2013 and ended on 14th October 2013.

According to Odisha State government officials around 12 million people affected.

10. Kashmir Floods, 2014

 On 24th September 2014, the Kashmir region witnessed disastrous floods across the state caused by Torrential rainfall. According to data provided by government around 270 people died in India and 280 people died in Pakistan. In total 2,500 villages were affected by Kashmir Floods.
